NOVUS Glass Welcomes Veterans
St. Paul, MN–Veterans returning to civilian life after service to our country are often frustrated when searching for a new career. According to Franchise.org, one option may be franchise ownership, “With its rapid training opportunities, scalability, and need for operational execution and excellence, franchising has proven to be an excellent opportunity for veterans to continue serving their communities as local entrepreneurs.”
Throughout the franchise industry, the synergetic pairing of veterans and franchising is recognized. Veterans, with their commitment to excellence and following a process to achieve results, make great franchise owners. Franchising, which provides a process for everything, from selecting the business site, to sourcing materials, to finding clients, is an excellent vehicle for veteran business ownership. A focus from the industry to help veterans enter business ownership through franchising began years ago.
To promote veteran ownership of franchise businesses, the International Franchise Association, “in recognition of the need to find a place for our returning veterans, made a commitment in 2011 to hire and recruit 75,000 veterans and their spouses, including 5,000 wounded warriors, by the end of 2014 as part of Operating Enduring Opportunity. As part of the campaign, over 64,000 veterans, military spouses and wounded warriors have started careers in franchising, including 4,314 who have become veteran franchise business owners. Extending career opportunities to our nation’s veterans is critical both for the U.S. economy and for the social stability of veterans and their families.”
Last year Representatives Claudia Tenny and Julia Brownley introduced theVeteran Entrepreneurs Act of 2017, which includes a franchise fee credit for eligible veterans is an amount equal to 25 percent of the qualified franchise fee in connection with the purchase of a franchise. According to Ms. Tenny, “While the franchise industry offers numerous resources to help a new business owner be successful, they also charge a franchise fee in return, which adds to the already-large start-up cost of opening a new business. That is why we introduced the Veteran Entrepreneurs Act. This bipartisan legislation would help solve this problem by creating a tax credit of up to 25 percent of initial franchise fees for veterans seeking to own a franchise. It also gives the veteran the option to pass on that tax credit in exchange for a lower franchise fee.”
In a Vetfran.com article (republished from Stars and Stripes), Representative Tenny concluded, “We as a nation have made a promise to the heroes who put on the uniform. Small-business ownership must be accessible to all the men and women who have sacrificed on our behalf. The Veteran Entrepreneurs Act is one idea, among many, that can tear down the barriers to help veterans fulfill their dream of becoming entrepreneurs.”
